Carving a Community Out of a Forest

Throughout 2007 and 2008 the Stanly County Museum will celebrate the founding of Albemarle.  The Museum's Heritage Gallery will showcase the exhibit "Carving a Community out of a Forest: Albemarle Turns 150."  The exhibit details the history of Albemarle from its humble origins as a muddy crossroads in the mid nineteenth century, through its industrial development as a center for textile manufacturing, to its growing interconnection with Metrolina, North Carolina.

Coming Autumn 2008

This autumn the Museum’s permanent exhibit on Stanly County history will return—with a twist. Stanly County shares similar historical achievements with most North Carolina communities, such as the coming of the railroad and the development of the textile industry. But, did you know that Stanly County was established because of a horse thief? That Stanly County witnessed a major aerial bombardment in 1927 and was invaded by more than 100,000 troops in 1940? That a skeleton and tombstone were found beneath the floorboards of the old County Courthouse when it was demolished in 1973? This fall, come learn what your teachers didn’t teach you about Stanly County.
